Our Long and

Illustrious History

Iceni is an archery club shooting on the foundations of a very illustrious legacy.

The club began life in April 1956 as Norwich Civil Service Archers (NCSA) formed by a small group of civil servants in the city. One of the founder members was Bert Cox, whom some older members of the Norfolk association will remember. NCSA had quite a hand in forming the Norfolk County Association in 1960, and Bert Cox was the first gents’ county champion. As the club grew through the 1960s, the name of the late John Grant first appeared in the record books. John became a well-known figure in archery circles during the ’70s, qualifying as a County Judge and leading the first expedition to Rouen. His daughter Fiona did well in both county and national competitions, at one time holding most of the junior girls’ county records and a national clout record.

The NCSA was dissolved in February 1978 and reformed as Norwich Company of Archers, with the late Gerry Wegg and Roger Goodson taking the helm for the next 40 years. Two other club members made names for themselves during the ’70s and ’80s: Peter Jones became the first Norfolk gents Master Bowman and, along with his brother Colin, held most junior & senior county records between them and shot internationally. In 1989, shooting began on the fields of St Faiths, and in 1992, the club moved indoors in the Centre’s new multi-purpose hall. In the noughties, the club’s compound ladies won back-to-back county titles and helped usher in contemporary successes for the club.
